The New York Times article explains how consumers are manipulated by the design of Doritos. Specifically, multiple elements of the chips are created to be physically and psychologically appealing which increases consumption. Naturally, consumption of junk food is not good for one’s health.
May 2021 TOK Prescribed title #2 is focused on analyzing differences between change and progress. The Doritos RLE works in numerous ways. Here are a few:
- Changes in how governments regulate junk food companies – some would view more regulation as progress while others would not
- Changes in the use of science to increase consumption and whether or not this is progress
- Changes in a population’s lifestyle and health over time and whether or not this is progress
