Text: “‘Why Bother Talking To Liars?’ Estonia’s Former President Says No Point Negotiating With Russia.” Radio Free Europe Radio Liberty . https://www.rferl.org/amp/ukraine-war-ilves-interview-western-response/31805297.html
In the interview Estonia’s Former President, Toomas Hendrik Ilves, discusses the pointless of negotiating with Russia about the invasion of Ukraine. He states “why bother talking to liars [Russian]? I mean, what is the point of dialogue with a country that you cannot believe in the slightest.”
Ilves is essentially arguing that too much open-mindedness (i.e. assuming that Russia can negotiate in an honest way) is restrictive.
Also, the news organization that published the interview has an interesting connection to November 2022 TOK essay prescribed title number 2. Radio Free Europe Radio Liberty is a news organization that is funded by the U.S. government. To what extent does is acting “open-minded” about a government-funded new organization actually restrictive? Could that open-mindedness result in a lack of critical analysis of the content?
